Jason Mizell, M.D.
Special Advisor for Physician Education
Dr. Mizell is an Associate Professor of Surgery in the division of Colon and Rectal Surgery and has held several roles in student and physician education. He also is the founder and director of the award-winning Business of Medicine course.
In 2020, Dr. Mizell was awarded the White Coat Investor Financial Educator of the Year. He is passionate about teaching and created the Business of Medicine Course to address the deficit in financial education in the surgery department. The feedback was immediate and overwhelmingly positive. Due to the course’s success and after seeing the need for financial education in undergraduate medical education, he expanded the course to an elective for M4 medical students in 2014. The Business of Medicine has evolved into a comprehensive course that is now the largest elective on campus and most recently had 170 students enrolled.
Dr. Mizell and his wife married in 2000 and they have three children. The family is very active in their local church and has participated in medical mission trips to Mexico, Turkey, and Cambodia to help with medical and spiritual needs.
